Selecting a monitor is as easy as assembling a computer or upgrading your hardware. The screen affects the comfort of work and impression of the games, movies. It is the face of your PC. Beforehand it is important to define the main purpose of the monitor. This article is about choosing the monitor for studies, office work, design, working with graphics, games and movies.

Screen Size Comparison

Most monitors sold in 2021 come in 21- to 27-inch diagonals.

For reference:

  • 20-24 inches is a monitor for office, study, and Internet work;
  • 24-27 inches – for a home computer used for educational and entertainment purposes;
  • 27-28 inches and more – models for avid gamers and specialists in design, photography, creating and editing multimedia content, programming and layout.

Do not buy monitors with a diagonal of more than 32 inches for professional activities of photographers, programmers, designers, layout designers, architects and engineers. Experience shows that it is more convenient and cheaper (with few exceptions) to arrange a multi-monitor system. In other words, buy a couple of smaller monitors.

Screen resolution

For most areas, the optimal resolution is Full HD – 1920 × 1080 px. Developers, multimedia creators need a monitor with more pixels: 2560 × 1440 (QHD) or 2K (2560 × 1440). With powerful hardware, gamers will take a new look at familiar virtual worlds. For monitors with the ability to read 4K – content is still too little.

Note: with a diagonal of 20-22 inches with high resolution, the window elements will be small. Comfortable work in text and spreadsheet editors, browser, drawing and accounting applications will provide a resolution of 1600 × 900 px or a more square – 1600 × 1200 px (UXGA). For a PC that is rarely used, a 1280 × 1024 px (SXGA) or 1366 × 768 px (HDTV) model is wise.
